Welcome educators!! These lessons are designed to work with a third grade class. They can be modified to work with other grades as well. The standards at the bottom are all set for third grade. This is a list of rationales for the activities on the site. Underneath of those is a list of Blooms Taxonomy verbs and the levels that are being used for these lessons. Following that is a list of Common Core Standards that are used throughout these lesson. Finally is a work cited page at the very end.
Writing activity 1: The goal is to make the students design their very own character. They will think about what types of food that appeals to their senses. This is an opportunity for the students to really show their creativity and design an original storybook character.
Writing activity 2: This activity is used for the student to work on modifying the story. They have read new versions of fairy tales and saw how they could be different. Now they can right their own based off of the understanding of the original fairy tale and how it can be switched around like the stories in this book.
Writing Activity 3: This time students will use comprehension to figure out what the fox really does in each story. They will design a new version but leave his part to the side now. They will decide if the outcome is the same or would it be different. This way they can figure out what type of role he really plays in the stories.
Word Choice: Students will compare and contrast the different stories to the original fairy tales. They will think about prior stories that they have read and try to find how they are similar to these odd stories. They will also look for what is similar in them. At times it feels like they are completely different but there are many similarities in the stories even though they seem so strange.
Voice: Students will defend the personalities of Jack and the Giant. They will search through the story for clues that make them unique and really describe the true person they are. This will help students understand what can define a character in a story.
Poem: This fun activity allows students to create a shape poem. The goal is for them to generate a unique poem. They will be keeping the poem-cheesed theme for this activity. It could be done with other stories throughout the book as well.
Grammar: The grammar activity is used for student to apply their knowledge of adjectives and adverbs to find words or phrases in a scavenger hunt. This gives great practice and it feels like a game. This not only helps with grammar, but the students get a opportunity to reread sections for practice with their fluency as well.
For these lessons we have used four levels of Blooms Taxonomy. These levels are Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation.
